the one where rachael gets emotional!

Heightened emotions and mood swings are a normal part of pregnancy, but what are they all about. "Hormones!!" is everyone's favourite explanation, and yes that's true, but that's just scratching the surface. Why? What's the point of them?
Are they simply designed to terrify the father of the baby? Confuse you and everyone around you? Make you weep every time you look at the size of a pair of newborn socks? Make you fly into an uncontrollable rage because he can't recite word for word what the hypno birthing lady told him he needed to say during the second stage!?
All joking aside, yes that's exactly what they are about. You are meant to be an utterly fierce force of nature, a woman not to be messed with, a Mother.
In evolutionary terms the last few thousand years are just a drop in the ocean . Most of us, thankfully no longer need to worry about predators but we still carry the instincts we needed before we lived in a relatively safe world. We are still hard wired to love with such a ferocity that we would kill if we needed to! No different to a wolf mother, as Clarrisa Pinkola Estes so beautifully writes in 'Women who run with the wolves',
"Healthy wolves and healthy women share certain psychic characteristics: keen sensing, playful spirit and a heightened capacity for devotion. Wolves and women are relational by nature, inquiring, possessed of great endurance and strength. They are deeply intuitive, intensely concerned with their young, their mates and their pack. They are experienced in adapting to constantly changing circumstances; they are fiercely stalwart and very brave."
And in Ina May Gaskin's perfect words:
"the birthing woman becomes less like an individual personality and more like an elemental force, a tornado, a volcano, an earthquake or a hurricane with her own laws of behaviour".
So why resist? These feelings are not meant to be suppressed, embrace them, welcome them.
Now, hang on a minute, before you get carried away! I'm not suggesting that you should lose all control of this emotional juggernaut and leave a trail of destruction in your wake!
This is where yoga steps in to help. You can learn to focus on your breath, observe how you are feeling without any attachment and just be happy and grateful for those feelings. As the inimitable David Sye puts it, "third party that s**t!"
Close your eyes, focus simply on the sound of your breath in the back of your throat. Start to slow your breath and observe yourself as if you were watching someone else. Notice how beautiful she is, how alive, how powerful and how ready she is to be someone's Mumma! That's one lucky baby in there.xx
